Ever since a tiny Florida church announced a Koran fires, there has been good outrage. Various officials from the United States of America government have condemned the proposed action, along with world leaders. President Obama weighed in on the proposed Koran burning by the Dove World Outreach Center Church and controversial Pastor Terry Jones, saying the proposed demonstration will not be good for any person. Numerous officials have warned that it will only serve as a recruiting tool for terrorists. Should the church fail to listen to reason, there may be little recourse until following the fact.
President Barack Obama requests Koran fires to be stopped
The president has called for burning the Koran to not happen. As outlined by the Los Angeles Times, he asked that Pastor Terry Jones and the Dove World Outreach Center Church think about consequences to others first. The demonstration will only benefit the terrorists we are fighting, and that it will make Americans appear even more bigoted to the world. The president echoed the earlier caution of Gen. David Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Petraeus warned that the proposed “Burn a Koran Day” will only recruit more to the reason for the Taliban, and will endanger troops serving overseas also as civilians.
The global response
The planned book burnings has practically no followers. The global community is in resistance to the book burning. The British and French governments, according to CNN, have announced their condemnation of burning the Koran. Interpol, the international police force, also warned that it will only put more individuals in danger from terrorists. A spokesman for the Taliban said that if the church goes through with it, the Taliban will begin targeting Christians in retaliation. Sarah Palin is even against it, as the previous governor believes it only fosters hatred. Even the Vatican believes it to be a bad idea. They have also asked for a stop to the planned burnings.
Evaluating the opportunities
Terry Jones, the pastor of the small church in Gainesville, Fla., has said that the group is evaluating the decision. The President said he hopes Jones sees the light and recants. Religious tolerance is an essential part of the fabric of American society.
